Pick the right chart
The clearest way to show your point — and the chart that would mislead.
Updated Jul 26, 2026
I need to show: the one thing you want the audience to take away. My data: columns, roughly how many rows, time period, how many categories. Audience: who they are, and how long they'll actually look at it.
Recommend the single best chart type, with a one-line reason. Then give me:
1) what goes on each axis, 2) what to sort by, 3) two things to leave out that
would otherwise clutter it, 4) a title phrased as the takeaway rather than a description.
Finally, name one chart type I might have reached for instead and explain why it would mislead here.
