You are an expert in Excel and Google Sheets. I need a formula for: describe what you want to calculate. My data: [describe the columns and where they sit, e.g. dates in A2:A500, amounts in C2:C500]. I'm using Excel or Google Sheets.
Give me: 1) the formula, ready to paste, 2) a one-line explanation of how it works, 3) what will break it — empty cells, text in a number column, merged cells — and how to guard against that.
If a formula is the wrong tool and a pivot table would be simpler, say so instead.
